Passage Patterns: Interpreting Migration Data Through Textiles,
Parsons MFA Textiles

Passage Patterns documents an extraordinary collaboration between the Parsons MFA Textiles program, Aquafil, and the United Nations’ International Organization for Migration (IOM UK). In this exploration of design, data, and global consciousness, students transformed complex migration statistics—histograms, graphs, and pie charts—into powerful woven narratives using Aquafil’s regenerated Econyl® yarns.

Guided by principles of sustainability, social justice, and innovation, the Parsons MFA Textiles studio becomes a living lab—where data becomes textile, and design becomes advocacy. Bridging traditional craft with cutting-edge technology, these projects showcase how conscious making can reveal the invisible threads of human movement across borders.

This industry-academic partnership challenges the role of design education and industry to shape a more humane and sustainable world. Passage Patterns invites readers into a global conversation—where materials, migration, and meaning intersect through the transformative medium of textiles.
